Corps Respond – turning youth into local heroes.

Since 1982, Conservation Corps North Bay's crews have partnered with Federal, State, County, and local agencies, as well as fire departments to safeguard communities from natural disasters and provide immediate on-the-ground assistance during floods, wildfires, earthquakes, and other emergency events. This program also provides corpsmembers specialized training in emergency preparedness and response as well as completing service projects that make communities safer from the threats of wildfire and flooding.

Prepare for the worst

Naturally we can't prevent natural events like earthquakes and floods from happening. But we can take measures to ensure they don't become full-fledged disasters. The Corps Respond Program works on fire fuel reduction, creek maintenance and other projects with sponsors such as Marin County Public Works, Marin County Open Space District, Tiburon Public Works, San Rafael Fire Department and others. Corpsmembers receive power saw training to create fuel breaks in the wildland urban interface. These fuel breaks have been prescribed by fire departments and are used to give fire fighters a safe chance to save homes during a wildfire.

Expect the best

Community Emergency Response trainings address earthquake survival, fire prevention and suppression, search and rescue / disaster first aid emergency preparedness. In addition to their on-the-job training, Corps Respond members participate in classes at CCNB and partner facilities one day per week including shelter operations, wildland firefighting, flood fighting and hazardous materials clean up. Corpsmembers are taught flood response methods to reduce damage to property. They conduct levee patrol during storm events, build sandbag walls and remove obstructive debris.
