Position: AmeriCorps Sonoma Natural Resources Corpsmember

The opportunity: Learn about natural resources management and conservation issues while working in the field on projects that help restore the environment, ensure public safety and promote green jobs. Corpsmembers work with agencies such as the Sonoma County Water Agency and Sonoma County Agricultural Preservation and Open Space District to keep Sonoma County's wild lands accessible, safe and beautiful. Projects types include; trail maintenance, vegetation clearing, habitat restoration, flood prevention and fire-fuel reduction. You may receive training in hand and power tool use, plant identification, erosion control trail construction and general job training.

Duties and responsibilities:

  • Work cooperatively with a diverse group of people.
  • Report daily to a crew supervisor and carry out all assigned tasks.
  • Make a one-year, full-time commitment to the program.
  • Participate in both the field work and education aspects of the program.
  • Do strenuous work in all kinds of weather – heat, rain, wind, etc.

Compensation:

  • Monthly stipend of $1,200.
  • Training & mentorship in the environmental field, natural resource management, community leadership, and more.
  • $5,300 AmeriCorps Educational Award upon successful completion of year-long community service program to be used to repay student loans or for future college schooling expenses.
  • Post-service job search assistance and support for two (2) years after completion of the program.

Required qualifications:

  • U.S. citizen, national, or legal permanent resident alien of the U.S., at least 18 years old when the program begins.
  • Interest in career development, participation in job-training program and development of new skills.
  • Willingness to work a flexible weekly schedule: either Tuesday through Saturday schedule (and sometimes on Sunday), or Monday through Friday (and sometimes on Saturday); over 40 hours per week is required periodically for special events, retreats, and training.
  • Applicants are limited to two AmeriCorps service terms. Applications will only be accepted by members that have served or attempted one or less AmeriCorps service terms.
