Position: Natural Resources Crew Leader

The opportunity: Work closely with the Natural Resources Crew Supervisor and the Natural Resources Crew Coordinator to assist in supervising the completion of work projects. The NRCL must be able to supervise a crew of 8 to 12 corpsmembers between the ages of 18 to 28 years old in the absence of the Supervisor. Additionally, they are responsible for the safety and behavior of the crew throughout the workday and during education hours. This position requires leadership skills and the ability to help create an environment conducive to productivity, as well as personal and professional growth. The NRCL is a primary support to the Supervisor.

Compensation:

  • $9.00 - $10.50 an hour to start.
  • $5,300 AmeriCorps education scholarship after completion of 1,700 hours in our program if eligible.

  • Post-service job search assistance and support for two (2) years after completion of the program.

Duties and responsibilities:

  • Supervise tool and material loading in the morning and unloading in the afternoon. Assist the Supervisor in overseeing the crew or party of the crew, take responsibility for safety, work quality and discipline.
  • Teach safe tool operation to new corpsmembers. Work closely with corpsmembers to maintain safe, productive and efficient work sites. Assist as needed, in the education program, and with the Field Education Facilitator.
  • Share in daily driving duties—driving crews to and from work sites. Assist Supervisor with paperwork (timesheets, daily logs, Incident Reports, vehicle log, etc.) Pick up and deliver materials and tools on request. Assist in the orderly maintenance and inventory of tools and equipment.
  • Other duties may be assigned.

Required qualifications:

  • Possession of current California Drivers License and a clean driving record (1 point or less)
  • Ability to obtain a California Class B Drivers License, which includes a physical and drug screen
  • Completion of NRCL Orientation and Training
  • Completion, or working on completion of First Aid and CPR training
  • Ability to perform strenuous work
  • Enthusiasm for helping young adults and the environment

Desired qualifications:

  • Experience in supervising, training and educating.
  • Experience working with youth.
  • Demonstrated ability to safely use power and hand tools.
  • Knowledge of and/or experience with Natural Resource Management issues.
  • Knowledge of and/or experience with landscaping.

Physical demands:

  • Work outdoors around equipment and machinery,
  • Walk on uneven ground and steep hillsides
  • Withstand exposure to excessive noise, fumes and extremes in temperature.
  • Lift and move objects weighing up to 75 lbs, and carry objects at least ½ mile.
  • Use special visual and auditory protective equipment.
  • Walk and stand; sit and bend; squat and climb; kneel and twist; to talk or hear.
  • Use hands to operate objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms. Use hands to perform simple and power grasping, and fine manipulation; to push and pull.
  • Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
