What is AmeriCorps Corps Respond?

Corps Respond is an AmeriCorps program that specifically focuses on disaster preparedness, safety education, community outreach and conservation projects throughout Marin and Sonoma Counties. The AmeriCorps Corps Respond program is a part of our Natural Resource program at CCNB.

What do Corps Respond members do?

The San Francisco Bay Area is prone to natural disasters such as floods, fire and earthquakes. Program members are trained to safely respond to local and possibly national emergencies. They also assist Marin and Sonoma County agencies and organizations by preparing creeks to prevent flooding, building fire breaks to protect homes from wildland fires, and training community members in emergency preparedness. Corpsmembers undertake all these projects while enhancing the environment and protecting communities. They receive training in power tool use, project management, disaster operations, search and rescue, wildland fire response, flood response, public speaking, and more.

What kind of training do corpsmembers receive?

Corps Respond members receive chain saw training to create fuel breaks in the wildland urban interface. These fuel breaks have been prescribed by fire departments and are used to give fire fighters a safe chance to save homes during a fire. Corpsmembers are trained in flood response methods to reduce damage to property. They are skilled in levee patrol, sandbag wall construction and obstructive debris removal. Community Emergency Response Trainings address earthquake survival, fire prevention and suppression, search and rescue / disaster first aid emergency preparedness. In addition to their on-the-job training, Corps Respond AmeriCorps members participate in organized trainings at CCNB and partner facilities throughout Marin and Sonoma County.

CCNB also develops your career goals by providing you with opportunities to partner with agencies in the fields of emergency response and natural resources management. With Corps Respond, you will learn new skills, make new friends, and take pride in knowing that you saved lives.

What do Corps Respond members receive?

AmeriCorps members with CCNB receive a monthly living stipend of $1,200, health insurance, networking, mentorship, and training. After completing a year of service and a minimum of 1,700 hours, AmeriCorps members receive an education award of $4,725. This award can be used pay existing or future qualified student loans or educational expenses. In addition, corpsmembers benefit from two years of support in developing job skills through our Corps-to-Career program. Beyond these benefits, you will learn new skills, take on new responsibilities, and know the satisfaction of building a community and helping our nation be everything it ought to be.

What are the Corps Respond requirements?

In order to be an AmeriCorps member, you must be

  • U.S. Citizen, national, or legal permanent resident alien of the U.S., over the age of 18
  • interested in career development, participation in job-training program and development of new skills
  • committed to a year long service term.
  • willing to work a flexible weekly schedule; over 40 hours per week is required periodically for special events, retreats, trainings, and in the event of an emergency
  • have served less than two AmeriCorps service terms.

Can I defer student loans during my service with AmeriCorps?

Yes, you may qualify for forbearance during your year of service. Contact your lender for more specific information or to confirm your loan status during AmeriCorps service. reality.

Becoming an AmeriCorps Member
