Position: AmeriCorps Vista corpsmember, service year 2010-2011.
Currently accepting applications beginning September 6, 2010 for November 2010 through November 2011 service year.
The opportunity: Conservation Corps North Bay (CCNB) is a job-training and education program for young adults between the ages of 18 to 28 years old, using environmental conservation and public service work as the means for personal and professional growth. CCNB provides a structured environment in which youth can acquire education and employment tools including a strong work ethic, vocational training, academic education, and civic awareness. VISTA volunteers will help CCNB to strengthen its green corps pathway to self-sufficiency and employment. Strategies will include developing and leveraging resources and community partnerships and resources to enhance the experience corpsmembers obtain while in CCNB.
General Responsibilities
Goal A: Design or Update Career Development Resources
As part of Conservation Corps North Bay green jobs pathways, design or update career development components that will teach corpsmembers life skills, job search, career development and vocational skills. Responsibilities will include:
• Research and determine Corpsmember Transition Program needs/assets assessments
• Read and assess existing program activities and components
• Create components that will assist corpsmembers transitioning from CCNB to employment or further education.
• Obtain new or updated corpsmember transition strategies and activities
• Obtain new or updated career development program components for corpsmember job search and career education.
• Develop activities or components that will enhance Corpsmember Transition Program
GOAL B: Develop partnerships in the community
As part of Conservation Corps North Bay green jobs pathways and Corpsmember Transition Program, develop partnerships in the community that will bring transitional programs, instructors and volunteers to CCNB Center to provide direct services to the corpsmembers.
Responsibilities will include:
• Develop community relationships by attending meetings with community leaders
• Develop partnerships with colleges, Workforce Investment Act-funded entities, non-profit organizations, government agencies and other community partners
• Promote CCNB's work/learn program to potential community volunteers
• Develop a community partner database
• Assist during orientations and trainings for community volunteers and community partners
Compensation:
- Monthly stipend of $1,326.
- Training & mentorship in the environmental field, natural resource management, community leadership, & more.
- $5,350 AmeriCorps Educational Award upon successful completion of year-long 1,700 hours community service program to be used to repay student loans or for future college schooling expenses.
Benefits:
- CCNB Training Program consisting of technical trainings & field trips, corps to career counseling, and civic engagement lessons and projects.
- Health insurance and child care.
Required qualifications:
- U.S. citizen, national, or legal permanent resident alien of the U.S., at least 18 years old at beginning of their term of service..
- Interest in career development, participation in job-training program and development of new skills.
- Applicants can serve up to two years. Applications will only be accepted by members that have served or attempted to serve for less than two years.
Desired qualifications:
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Excellent computer skills.
- Experience working in community organizations.
- Ability to write and/or analyze and extrapolate information from written material.
- Ability to organize and/or participate as a partner in community-based groups.
- Ability to show community volunteers how to present curriculum and information to young adult corpsmembers.
- Knowledge and/or ability to learn about career development, job placement, vocational education, apprenticeship programs, and higher education opportunities.
